5 ingredients. That is all you need for guacamole. I like to keep my guacamole simple. Not because I’m lazy, but I know from experience that it doesn’t take much to make good guacamole, so why add all the extra stuff??? Avocados are beautifully delicious and it doesn’t take much to transform them into a healthy, creamy dip. Over the years, I’ve added things like tomatoes, cilantro, salsa, chili pepper, taco seasoning, and sour cream, but really, a little bit of salt, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and lime juice make for a perfect guacamole in my opinion.
I’ve tried various tricks to keep my guacamole from browning, but let me share with you the two tricks I’ve found to be most useful:
- Lime juice. The trick is to not use too much so that your guacamole is over-powered with citrus, but just enough to delay oxidation. I’ve never tried lemon juice, lime has always felt like a more traditional flavor.
- If you need to save any leftovers (what are the chances!!?) or are making the guacamole ahead of time, gently press the guacamole into a container, filling as much space as possible. Take a piece of aluminum foil and press it against the top of the guacamole, sealing around the edges. This should keep the majority of the guacamole from browning.
Gluten Free Guacamole

- Cut each avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out avocado flesh from the skin. Discard the skin and pit. Place avocado in a medium bowl and mash with a fork until most clumps are gone.
